A planet in a gem-set dome
The Jacob & Co. Astronomia Metaverso, reference AS312.40.AA.UA.A, in an 18-carat rose gold case with sapphire side panes, 44 mm across and 21 mm high. Its dial is spinel, with rose gold-plated hands, on a green alligator leather strap with an 18-carat rose gold deployant buckle.
In the Earth version the dome is 18-carat yellow gold and the rotating gem is green.
Astronomia Metaverso is a set of eight watches, one for each planet of the solar system. Five of them exist as physical watches and as digital pieces, while Saturn, Uranus and Neptune exist only as digital pieces. Between the vertical movement and the curved sapphire crystal sits an open-worked dome, set with gems, that interprets the surface of the watch’s namesake planet.
Calibre JCAM42 adapts the Astronomia Solar movement in a fixed form, because the dome rules out rotation. It has 296 components and a flying tourbillon that hangs at the end of one satellite arm and turns in 60 seconds. The hour and minute dial is off-centre. A Jacob-cut gem of 288 facets, mounted on a satellite arm, rotates to represent the planet. This version is a single physical piece with a single digital counterpart.
