Time zones by the hour
The F.P. Journe UTC in 18K 6N gold with an 18K 6N gold and whitened guilloché silver dial and a laser-engraved, painted world map on sapphire. Self-winding calibre 1300.3 with off-centre local time, 24-hour home time on a 5N gilt hand, time-zone map, large date and power reserve; 10.6 mm high.
F.P. Journe built the UTC around the modern division of the world into full-hour time zones, and gives its production as 2011 to 2018. The brand sets it against Greenwich Mean Time, the solar reference adopted as official time throughout Great Britain in 1880 and replaced in 1972 by Coordinated Universal Time, which rests on atomic time. A patented mechanism shows local time, home time and the difference between summer and winter hour.
Local time is shown by the blued hands on an off-centre dial, and the calendar is linked to them, so the date is that of the wearer's current location. Home time is read on a 24-hour scale by a 5N gilt steel hand. At 7:30 a sapphire disc carries a laser-engraved and painted map of the earth divided into time zones, turned by a secured pusher at 4 o'clock. The movement is the Octa automatic calibre 1300.3 in 18K rose gold, with a retrograde reserve at 9 o'clock on a 120-hour scale.
For collectors
The date is tied to local time, not home time, so it follows the wearer across time zones. The calendar does not follow the length of the month: F.P. Journe states that the passage between months of 28 to 31 days is made by hand.
