Overview
The first Octa
The F.P. Journe Octa Réserve de Marche, reference A, in platinum on the platinum bracelet, white gold and whitened guilloché silver dial, blued steel hands. Self-winding calibre 1300.3, the first Octa: regulator dial with off-centre hours and minutes, small seconds at 4:30, two-figure date, power reserve at 7h30. 10.6 mm high.
The Octa Réserve de Marche is the first Octa model and, as F.P. Journe states, the first automatic watch F.P. Journe made; F.P. Journe dates its production to between 2004 and 2016. The brand's claim for it is a world first: a mechanical movement with automatic winding and a power reserve of more than 120 hours. The dial is the layout the brand calls its trademark regulator dial, with the hours and minutes off-centre, small seconds, a two-figure date and the 120-hour reserve indicator. F.P. Journe gives the movement in its calibre 1300.3 form, with unidirectional winding.
The brand's description of the Octa is of one chassis into which different complications are built without changing its size: F.P. Journe gives the five-day automatics as always 30 mm by 5.5 mm, and gives this movement as 30.80 mm overall and 5.80 mm high. The balance is free-sprung, its rate set by four inertia weights, with a flat microflamed Anachron spring welded to a Nivatronic collet, at 21,600 vibrations an hour; the brand's claim is that the movement keeps precision timekeeping for the five days, 120 hours, off the wrist, and the rated autonomy is 160 ± 10 hours. The date changes instantaneously and is set from the crown in position 2, the time in position 3; a slipping mainspring takes the full wind of the off-centre rotor.
For collectors
On the wrist the identifying feature is the regulator dial with off-centre hours and minutes, which F.P. Journe calls its trademark; the reserve indicator sits at 7h30.
Key details
Design and engineering
- One chassis for every complicationThe brand's account of the Octa is a single base into which its complications are built without changing the movement's size, which it gives as 30 mm by 5.5 mm for the five-day automatics. This first model carries only the time, the date and the reserve on that base.
- Five days off the wristThe brand's claim is the first automatic movement with a reserve of more than 120 hours that keeps precision timekeeping for those five days when the watch is not worn; the brand rates autonomy at 160 ± 10 hours.
- Free-sprung balanceNo regulator index: four inertia weights on the balance set the rate. Flat microflamed Anachron spring, Nivatronic laser-welded to the collet, mobile stud holder. Amplitude 280° dial up at 12 hours and 220° at 90 hours.
- Regulator dialOff-centre hours and minutes, small seconds at 4:30, the two-figure date and the reserve indicator at 7h30. White gold with whitened guilloché silver; blued steel hands.
- CrownThree positions: the date is set by turning the crown either way in position 2, the time in position 3; the date changes instantaneously.
- FinishHigh grade: circular stripes on the bridges, partly circular-grained base plate, polished screw heads with chamfered slots, pegs with polished rounded ends, steelwork with polished chamfers.
