Overview
A chronograph built into the Octa
The F.P. Journe Octa Chronographe, reference C, in platinum on a leather strap with the 5N gold and whitened guilloché silver dial. 38 mm and 10.6 mm high, self-winding on the Octa calibre 1300, with a flyback minutes-and-seconds chronograph and a large date.
F.P. Journe produced this Octa Chronographe between 2001 and 2008. The brand presents it as the first wristwatch chronograph with a large date and flyback to offer a power reserve of more than 120 hours, and says it changed the classical conception of the chronograph by building the complication into the self-winding Octa calibre.
It is a minutes-and-seconds chronograph. The central hand is the chronograph seconds, the counter at 9 o'clock totals the elapsed minutes up to 60, and the running seconds have their own subdial at 6, with the hours and minutes off-centre. A large date, carried on two concentric discs, changes instantaneously. The movement winds in both directions through an off-centre rotor, with a slipping mainspring.
For collectors
F.P. Journe's account is that this one occupies a space just 1 mm high under the dial, shared with the large-date discs, so the whole chronograph movement is built in three layers; its specification gives the complete movement as 5.50 mm high.

Design and engineering
- FlybackOne press returns the running counters to zero and starts them again, so consecutive intervals can be timed without the stop, reset and restart sequence.
- CountersSeconds from the centre and minutes at 9 o'clock keep the chronograph readings apart from the time display, which is off-centre with its own small seconds.
- SettingThree crown positions: in position 2 the crown sets the date, turned one way or the other; in position 3 it sets the time.
- BalanceFree-sprung, with four inertia weights, a flat Anachron microflamed spring on a laser-welded Nivatronic collet, a mobile stud holder and a pinned stud.
- FinishingCircular stripes on the bridges, partly circular-grained base plate, gilt engravings, polished screw heads with chamfered slots, pegs with polished rounded ends.
