Overview
Annual calendar on the Octa base
The F.P. Journe Octa Calendrier, reference Q, in platinum on the platinum bracelet, white gold dial, blued steel hands. Self-winding calibre 1300.3 with retrograde annual calendar: off-centre hours and minutes, small seconds at 4:30, large central date, day and month in windows. 10.6 mm high.
The Octa Calendrier is the annual calendar of the Octa line, which F.P. Journe calls the third complication built into the automatic Octa calibre and dates to between 2004 and 2015. The brand's claim for it is a world first: the first wristwatch to integrate an annual calendar with a large date and a power reserve of more than 120 hours. The point F.P. Journe makes of the Octa collection is the identical base plate under every model: here a retrograde annual calendar, in the brand's words a sizable complication, was fitted while keeping the standard movement's dimensions, which the brand gives as 30.80 mm across and 5.80 mm high.
An annual calendar carries the lengths of the months so that the date advances by itself through months of 29, 30 and 31 days. Its one blind spot is the common year: in three years out of four the wearer moves the date from the 28th to the 29th of February with a turn of the crown, after which it passes on its own from 29 February to 1 March. The dial reads off-centre hours and minutes, small seconds at 4:30, a large central date, and the day and the month in windows. F.P. Journe gives the winding as bi-directional, the earlier arrangement of the Octa rotor, on a movement that keeps the Octa's free-sprung balance with four inertia weights at 21,600 vibrations an hour and an autonomy of 160 ± 10 hours.
For collectors
F.P. Journe calls the calendar retrograde and gives a large central date with the day and the month in windows. What F.P. Journe is clear on is the maintenance: one manual advance a year, from 28 to 29 February in a common year, made with the crown, and none in a leap year. F.P. Journe gives this execution bi-directional winding and gilt engravings among the finishes.
Key details
Design and engineering
- Third complication on the same base plateThe brand's Octa principle is one base plate for every model. The annual calendar, with a large date, was built onto it without changing the standard movement's dimensions, which F.P. Journe gives as 30 mm across in its description and as 30.80 mm in its specifications.
- One correction a yearThe date passes by itself through months of 29, 30 and 31 days. In a common year, three years in four, the wearer turns the crown once to move it from the 28th to the 29th of February; it then goes on to 1 March by itself.
- Bi-directional windingF.P. Journe gives bi-directional automatic winding for this model, the earlier arrangement of the off-centre Octa rotor; winding speed 274 clockwise revolutions per 24 hours.
- Free-sprung balanceFour inertia weights, flat microflamed Anachron spring, Nivatronic laser-welded to the collet, mobile stud holder. Amplitude 280° dial up at 12 hours and 220° at 90 hours.
- DialOff-centre hours and minutes, small seconds at 4:30, large central date, day and month in windows. White gold or 18K 6N gold, with whitened guilloché silver on the executions that print it; blued steel hands.
- FinishHigh grade: circular stripes on the bridges, partly circular-grained base plate, gilt engravings, polished screw heads with chamfered slots, pegs with polished rounded ends.
