The Octa with power reserve and large date
The F.P. Journe Octa Automatique Réserve Nacre, reference AR, in 18K 6N gold with the pink mother-of-pearl dial. 10.6 mm high, self-winding on calibre Octa 1300.3, with a large date, small seconds at 4:30 and the power reserve at 9 o'clock.
The Octa Automatique Réserve Nacre, produced between 2009 and 2016, shows the Octa calibre with hours and minutes, small seconds, a large date and the power reserve that measures its long running time. The Boutique Nacre dress sets a mother-of-pearl hour circle with Arabic numerals around a clous de Paris guilloché centre. Power reserve with large date is the first of the complications Journe lists when he describes fitting several functions into the Octa while keeping one size for every model.
The Octa was Journe's answer to a long-standing compromise. Watchmakers had extended running time by adding a wheel to the train, then fitted a smaller balance to spare the weaker energy that reached it, and lost stability. Journe lengthened the mainspring instead, a spring of 1 metre by 1 millimetre integrated on the same level as the gear train and escapement. Its low torque allows fast automatic winding through an off-centre rotor turning one way, and F.P. Journe gives a power reserve of 160 ± 10 hours.

The reserve indicator reads the figure the Octa was built for, and F.P. Journe's amplitude specification shows what it means at the balance: 280° dial-up at 12 hours and still 220° at 90 hours, against a total reserve of 160 ± 10 hours.
