Overview
Moon phase in the Octa line
The F.P. Journe Octa Automatique Lune Havana, reference AL, in platinum on the caramel alligator strap, Havana guilloché silver dial, ivory-coloured steel hands. Self-winding calibre 1300.3 with the unidirectional rotor: centre hands, small seconds at 4:30, moon phase, large date and power reserve at 9h00. 40 mm, 10.6 mm high.
The Havana execution, which F.P. Journe dates to between 2016 and 2018, is the Octa Automatique Lune in a 40 mm case with the warm-coloured dial that its own dialmakers, Les Cadraniers de Genève, developed over several months from gold and ruthenium, ivory-coloured steel hands, and a caramel alligator strap or the matching bracelet. For this execution, F.P. Journe states that a specific wheel train gives the moon phase its precision and that it is adjusted from the crown.
The Octa Automatique Lune is the moon-phase companion of the Octa Automatique Réserve, and F.P. Journe gives that the model was produced between 2007 and 2018. Both came with the revised calibre 1300.3 and, in the founder's telling, answered clients who found the classical Octa dial hard to read: central hands, and a dial drawn from the Chronomètre Souverain, the watch that took the Men's Watch category at the Geneva Watchmaking Grand Prix in 2005. The Octa line itself dates from 2001, automatic wristwatch chronometers with a 120-hour reserve and one case size for every complication.
Calibre 1300.3 winds in one direction: the rotor sits on a ball bearing whose ceramic balls let it drive one way and lock it the other, and it returns to rest when the wrist is still, so that every small movement goes into winding. The founder's account of the base is a mainspring 1 metre long and 1 millimetre thick, laid on the same level as the train and escapement, whose low torque allows fast winding and a reserve rated at 160 ± 10 hours. The moon phase is added to that base without changing its variable-inertia balance, free-sprung with four inertia weights at 21,600 vibrations an hour. The dial reads centre hours and minutes, small seconds at 4:30, the large date, the reserve at 9h00 and the moon; the date changes instantaneously and is set from the crown in position 2.
For collectors
F.P. Journe gives the movement as 34.60 mm overall against a casing-up diameter of 30.40 mm, and a height of 5.80 mm. The moon-phase work is carried within the Octa's thickness, which is the point the founder makes of the line, complications added to one movement without changing its size. The Havana is 40 mm.
Key details
Design and engineering
- One-way rotor on a ceramic-ball bearingThe balls let the rotor drive in one direction and block it in the other; when the wrist is still the rotor returns to its rest position. The brand's aim was a watch that winds fully on a wearer who moves little.
- Moon phase on the Octa baseThe moon is read on the dial beside the large date and the reserve at 9h00, on the same 5.80 mm movement height as the rest of the line.
- Variable-inertia balanceFree-sprung, four inertia weights, flat microflamed Anachron spring, Nivatronic collet, mobile stud holder. Amplitude 280° dial up at 12 hours and 220° at 90 hours.
- DialCentre hours and minutes, small seconds at 4:30, large date, reserve at 9h00, moon phase. Havana guilloché silver with ivory-coloured steel hands.
- CrownThree positions: the date is set by turning the crown either way in position 2, the time in position 3; the date changes instantaneously.
- FinishHigh grade: circular stripes on the bridges, partly circular-grained base plate, polished screw heads with chamfered slots, pegs with polished rounded ends, steelwork with polished chamfers.
