Overview
The watch that stops and starts itself
The F.P. Journe élégante 48 mm in titanium, reference ELHT, on the red rubber strap. Flat Tortue case, 48 × 40 mm, 7.95 mm high, luminescent white dial. Electromechanical calibre 1210: quartz-timed, with a mechanical train and hands, and a motion detector at 4:30 that stops the hands after 35 minutes at rest.
The élégante is F.P. Journe's electromechanical line and took eight years to develop. The brand's stated aim was autonomy, 8 to 10 years in daily use and up to 18 in standby, achieved by letting the watch stop when it is not worn. The mechanical parts are made by F.P. Journe; the electronics are Swiss, with a microprocessor designed for the watch. The design of the Flat Tortue® case is trademarked.
A mechanical motion detector, an inertia weight visible on the dial at 4:30, tells the processor whether the watch is moving. After 35 minutes without movement the gear train, rotors and hands stop while the processor goes on counting time; at the first movement the hands run by the shortest route, forwards or backwards, to the correct time. A patented two-rotor motor drives the hands. The white dial centre is luminescent, so at night the hands read as silhouettes against it.
For collectors
The timebase is quartz, but the train, rotors, hands and the visible motion detector are made by F.P. Journe and finished to the conventions of its mechanical calibres, down to an engraved and decorated battery bridge. The stop-and-restart is the reason the movement exists rather than a convenience added to it, and the specification that defines the watch is its autonomy, 8 to 10 years in use and 18 in standby, not its frequency.
Key details
Design and engineering
- StandbyStopping the mechanical parts is what makes the autonomy possible. With only the processor keeping time, consumption is low enough for up to 18 years in standby against 8 to 10 in daily use.
- Automatic re-settingOn restart the hands take the shortest path, clockwise or anti-clockwise, to the time the processor has kept, so the display catches up without the wearer resetting it.
- Two-rotor motorPatented, driving the hands through a gear train made by F.P. Journe. The seconds stop while the crown is pulled for setting.
- Flat Tortue caseRegistered Flat Tortue® shape, 48 × 40 mm and 7.95 mm high, in titanium, with a sapphire crystal case back, a screw-down crown and water resistance to 30 m.
- DialLuminescent white centre within an outer dial of screwed steel elements, blued steel hands, legible by day and by night.
