Overview
The élégante at 40 mm
The F.P. Journe élégante 40 mm Titalyt® with 2 rows of diamonds, reference ELT, on the orange rubber strap. Titalyt®-treated titanium Flat Tortue case set with 38 brilliant-cut diamonds, 40 × 35 mm and 7.35 mm high, luminescent white dial. Electromechanical calibre 1210: quartz-timed, stopping its hands after 35 minutes at rest.
The 40 mm case in grade 5 titanium with the Titalyt® treatment, an electro-plasma oxidation the brand says hardens the metal and improves its resistance to wear and corrosion, set with two rows of diamonds: 38 brilliant-cut stones, VS1 F/G, about 0.50 carat. The dial keeps the luminescent white centre and blued steel hands of the titanium 40 mm.
F.P. Journe presents the élégante as his first collection for women, and the 40 mm case is the size the brand describes in those terms. The line took eight years to develop. Journe's own account is that women had been asking him for twenty years for a watch made for them, different from the rest and comfortable to wear, and that his answer was a watch built to run for years without attention: the stated autonomy is 8 to 10 years in daily use and up to 18 in standby. The mechanical parts are made by F.P. Journe and the electronics in Switzerland, with a microprocessor designed for the watch. The design of the Flat Tortue® case is trademarked; the same movement is also cased at 48 × 40 mm, and this is the 40 × 35 mm watch.
The movement is electromechanical: a quartz timebase and a processor drive a mechanical train, two rotors and the hands through a patented two-rotor motor. A mechanical motion detector, an inertia weight visible on the dial at 4:30, tells the processor whether the watch is being worn. After 35 minutes without movement the train, rotors and hands stop while the processor goes on counting; when the watch is moved again the hands run by the shortest route, clockwise or anti-clockwise, to the time it has kept. Stopping the mechanical parts when they are not needed is what makes the autonomy possible. Hours and minutes are central, with small seconds at 6 o'clock, and the seconds stop while the crown is pulled for setting.
For collectors
The 40 mm and 48 mm élégante are one movement in two cases: F.P. Journe's specification lists a single calibre 1210 with two Flat Tortue® sizes, 40 × 35 mm at 7.35 mm and 48 × 40 mm at 7.95 mm. Nothing in the movement was reduced for the smaller watch, so the choice between them is one of proportion on the wrist, not of mechanism.
Key details
Design and engineering
- StandbyAfter 35 minutes motionless the gears, rotors and hands stop and only the processor keeps time. That is where the autonomy comes from: 8 to 10 years in daily use, up to 18 years in standby.
- Automatic re-settingMoved again, the watch sets its own hands by the shortest path, forwards or backwards, to the time the processor has held, so the display catches up without the wearer resetting it.
- Two-rotor motorPatented, driving the hands through a gear train made by F.P. Journe. The stem has two positions and the seconds stop in the setting position.
- Flat Tortue® caseRegistered Flat Tortue® shape at 40 × 35 mm and 7.35 mm total thickness, in grade 5 titanium with Titalyt® treatment, set with 38 brilliant-cut diamonds, VS1 F/G, about 0.50 carat, with a sapphire crystal case back, a screw-down crown and water resistance to 30 m.
- DialLuminescent white centre, which the brand likens to white mother-of-pearl, within an outer dial of screwed steel elements; blued steel hands; small seconds at 6 o'clock. At night the hands read as silhouettes against the luminous centre.
