The watch that stops when it is set down
The F.P. Journe élégante 40 mm full set in 18K 6N gold, reference EL, on the Karung snake silver rose strap with a set 6N gold folding clasp. Case with 385 diamonds, dial centre paved with 381, blued steel hands. Flat Tortue case, 40 × 35 mm, 7.35 mm high, electromechanical calibre 1210.
The jewellery version of the 40 mm élégante. The Flat Tortue case is set with 385 brilliant-cut diamonds, VVS1 F/G, about 3.53 carats; the dial centre is paved with 381 more, about 0.6 carat; and the folding clasp carries diamonds of about 0.95 carat. Both metals, 6N gold and platinum, take blued steel hands. F.P. Journe gives the production as between 2014 and 2021.
The élégante was F.P. Journe's first ladies' collection and its first electromechanical movement, and the brand says the movement took eight years to develop. In Journe's own account, women had been asking him for a watch of their own for 20 years, one that was different and comfortable to wear; his answer was built around autonomy, 8 to 10 years in daily use and up to 18 in standby. The mechanical parts are made by F.P. Journe and the electronics in Switzerland, around a microprocessor created for the watch.
A mechanical motion detector, an inertia weight visible on the dial at 4:30, tells the processor whether the watch is being worn. After 35 minutes without movement the gears, rotors and hands stop while the processor goes on counting time; when the watch is moved again the hands run to the correct time by the shorter route, forwards or backwards. A patented two-rotor motor drives the hands, with central hours and minutes and a small seconds at 6 o'clock.
For collectors
The timebase is quartz, but the movement is built and finished like F.P. Journe's mechanical calibres: the brand lists a 4N golden movement, Côtes de Genève, polished and bevelled screw heads, pegs with polished rounded ends and an engraved, decorated battery bridge. The figure that defines the watch is its autonomy rather than its frequency, and the standby is what delivers it.

Design and engineering
- StandbyStopping the gears, rotors and hands is what makes the autonomy possible. With only the processor keeping time, consumption is low enough for up to 18 years in standby, against 8 to 10 in daily use.
- Automatic re-settingWhen the watch is moved again the hands take the shortest path, clockwise or anti-clockwise, to the time the processor has kept, so the display catches up without the wearer resetting it.
- Two-rotor motorPatented, driving the hands through a gear train made by F.P. Journe. The time is set with the crown in its second position, and the seconds stop while it is pulled.
- Flat Tortue caseRegistered Flat Tortue® shape, 40 × 35 mm and 7.35 mm high, with a sapphire crystal case back, a screw-down crown and water resistance to 30 m. Metal, gem-setting and strap vary with the execution.
- DialAn inner dial framed by an outer dial of screwed steel elements. F.P. Journe makes the centre in white or black luminescent material, white or black sapphire, or set with diamonds or with diamonds and precious stones, according to the model.
