Overview

Large date, moon phase and a seconds disc

The F.P. Journe Divine, reference DN, in platinum on the platinum bracelet, whitened guilloché silver dial with white gold numerals and apertures. Self-winding calibre 1300.3 in 18K rose gold: moon phase, instantaneous large date, seconds on a disc at 4:30, retrograde reserve at 10. 10.7 mm high.

The Divine is a moon-phase and large-date watch on F.P. Journe's automatic Octa base, calibre 1300.3 in 18K rose gold, which the brand describes as the first automatic movement with a reserve sufficient for precision timekeeping over five days, 120 hours, against an effective autonomy it states as 160 ± 10 hours. F.P. Journe presents the current Divine as a new look, uncluttered and legible: the instantaneous large date in enlarged windows, the seconds shown on a disc rather than by a hand, and the retrograde reserve indicator on a 120-hour scale, both delineated on the dial surface.

The large date changes in one step in its two enlarged windows. The seconds turn on a disc at 4:30 and the reserve hand falls back along its 120-hour scale as the mainspring unwinds. The moon phase is driven by a wheel train of its own, which F.P. Journe says makes the indication precise, and is set together with the date from the crown in position 2, turned one way for the date and the other for the moon; position 3 sets the time. Underneath is the Octa construction, the automatic base on which the brand builds its complications at one movement size, wound in one direction by the off-centre 22K 5N gold rotor through a self-locking ball bearing.

For collectors

The Divine has been made with two dials, and F.P. Journe tells them apart. The current execution carries a guilloché silver dial with gold numerals and apertures and rhodium-plated or gilt hands; the execution listed under the brand's Octa collection has a gold-and-whitened-silver dial, blued steel hands, hour numerals of differing sizes and red dots. The brand's description of the current watch, a new look, uncluttered and legible, is a description of that change.

Design and engineering

  • Octa baseCalibre 1300.3 is the brand's automatic base. In the founder's account its mainspring is 1 metre long and 1 millimetre thick, laid on the same level as the train and escapement, and its low torque allowed fast automatic winding: one and a half hours on a Chappuis cyclotest for over five days' running. The complications built on it keep an identical movement size.
  • Large date and seconds discThe date jumps instantaneously in two enlarged windows. The seconds are read on a rotating disc at 4:30 rather than a hand, and the reserve is a retrograde hand at 10 o'clock on a 120-hour scale; both are delineated on the dial surface rather than set in sub-dials.
  • Moon phaseA dedicated wheel train drives the moon. It is set from the crown: in position 2 one direction of rotation moves the date, the other the moon, so no corrector is needed.
  • Balance and escapementFree-sprung balance with four inertia weights, flat Anachron micro-flamed spring laser-welded to a Nivatronic collet, mobile stud holder; in-line lever escapement with a 15-tooth wheel. Amplitude 280° dial up at 12 hours and 220° at 90 hours.
  • DialWhitened guilloché silver with 18K gold numerals and apertures; steel hands.
  • DecorationHigh grade: circular stripes on the bridges, base plate partly circular-grained, polished screw heads with chamfered slots, pegs with polished rounded ends, steelwork with polished chamfers and straight graining.
