Two movements, one rate
The F.P. Journe Chronomètre à Résonance, reference R, in 18K 6N gold on a leather strap with the 5N gold and whitened guilloché silver dial. 38 mm and 9.1 mm high, manually wound on calibre 1499: two complete movements side by side, their balances held to one rate by resonance.
F.P. Journe made the Chronomètre à Résonance in this form between 2000 and 2005 and calls it the first wristwatch chronometer to use resonance: two movements side by side, each driving its own dial, whose balances fall into step with each other. The brand puts more than 20 years of research behind it and presents it as a movement designed, from the outset, around the constraints of the wrist.
Calibre 1499 is two movements in one frame. Each has its own linear escapement and its own free-sprung balance, regulated by inertia weights on the rim and fitted with a flat microflamed Anachron spring laser-pinned to a Nivatronic collet. No gear or spring links the two balances; in F.P. Journe's account, resonance between them is what improves the timekeeping on the wrist. One crown at 12 o'clock winds both movements and sets each dial on its own.
For collectors
Because the two movements are complete and independent, this construction also works as a two-zone watch: the brand notes that the dials can be set to different time zones. Pulling the crown at 4 o'clock brings both seconds hands to zero together, which puts the two displays level so their running can be compared.

Design and engineering
- Twin movementsEach movement has its own train, escapement, balance and dial, with small seconds at 6 o'clock on both. A single power reserve indicator sits at 11 o'clock.
- ResonanceThe balances are not coupled mechanically. The brand's principle is that the two, running close together, influence each other through resonance, and that this is what steadies the rate on the wrist.
- One crown, two settingsThe crown at 12 o'clock winds both movements. In position 2 it sets the left dial when turned clockwise and the right dial when turned anti-clockwise.
