Overview
A hundredth of a second, released by the escapement
The F.P. Journe Centigraphe, reference CTS2, in grade 5 titanium on the titanium bracelet, with the yellow aluminium-alloy dial, applied luminescent numerals, sapphire counters and luminescent hands. 44 mm and 11 mm high; manually wound calibre 1506 in aluminium alloy, a hundredth-of-a-second chronograph controlled by a single rocker.
The Centigraphe of the lineSport collection is a hand-wound chronograph that reads elapsed time from a hundredth of a second to ten minutes on three dials, each scaled in black and red. The movement is in aluminium alloy, in a 44 mm case 11 mm high with a ceramic-inlaid bezel and a bracelet in the case metal. The brand's engagement with the ICM, the Institute of Brain and Spinal Cord in Paris, began with the Centigraphe Souverain through Jean Todt, and it states that 30% of the profit on each Centigraphe goes to the institute, without limit of time.
The hundredth-of-a-second hand at 10 o'clock turns once a second. It is not driven round in the ordinary way: a wheel on the escape wheel releases its arbor, so the hand runs on the chronograph train's energy at a pace set by the escapement, and it can be halted anywhere in its second, even between two divisions, by lifting its pinion clear of the escapement's, which presses on the pivot shank as a brake. The hundredth and the 20-second hand at 2 o'clock are driven by two trains taken from the centre of the mainspring, and a third train from the barrel arbor drives the 10-minute hand at 6 o'clock; the arrangement is patented. Because the chronograph draws from the barrel arbor rather than through the going train, the brand says the balance's amplitude does not change when the chronograph runs. Zeroing is by hammers on snail cams for the two counters and, for the hundredth, by a beak on its pinion that stops against a lever. Start, stop and return to zero are all on one rocker in the case band at 2 o'clock, which is patented too. A maintaining-power device in the barrel keeps the drive up while the crown is turned.
For collectors
The reserve figures say what the chronograph costs: 80 hours with it stopped, 24 with it running, because the chronograph train draws on the same barrel. The brand gives the whole watch at around 81 grams.
Key details
Design and engineering
- Rocker controlOne rocker in the case band at 2 o'clock starts, stops and zeroes the chronograph, in place of two pushers either side of the crown; the brand holds a patent on it. The crown has three positions: 0 disengaged, 1 winding, 2 time-setting.
- Isolated chronographThe hundredth and 20-second hands are driven by separate trains from the centre of the mainspring, and the 10-minute hand by a third from the barrel arbor, so the going train and the balance are left alone while timing. Patented.
- Fractional stopThe hundredth hand can be stopped between divisions. Its pinion is lifted out of mesh with the escapement's and braked on its pivot shank, so the reading is not forced to the nearest hundredth.
- Three scalesHundredths at 10 o'clock, one revolution a second; seconds at 2 o'clock, one revolution in 20 seconds; minutes at 6 o'clock, graduated to 10. Zeroed by hammers on snail cams and, for the hundredth, a beak on its pinion.
- Case and bracelet44 mm, 11 mm high, bezel inlaid with ceramic. Titanium bracelet; the links at the case articulate, with a folding clasp adjustable by about 5 mm.
- FinishingCircular stripes on the bridges, circular graining on the base plate, polished screw heads with chamfered slots, pegs with polished rounded ends, straight-grained steel work.
