Overview
Moon phase on the Octa base
The F.P. Journe Automatique Lune, reference AL2, in 18K 6N gold on the 6N gold bracelet, blue guilloché silver dial with 18K 5N gold appliqué numerals, 5N gilt steel hands. Self-winding calibre 1300.3 in 18K rose gold with moon phase, large date and retrograde power reserve at 9h00; small seconds at 4:30. 10.7 mm high.
This is the boutique execution of the Automatique Lune, which F.P. Journe marks as exclusively available in F.P. Journe boutiques and espaces. The dial is blue guilloché silver with appliqué numerals in 18K white gold on the platinum case and in 18K 5N gold on the 18K 6N gold case, with rhodium-plated or 5N gilt steel hands to match.
The Automatique Lune is the current form of F.P. Journe's automatic moon-phase watch, on calibre 1300.3 in 18K rose gold, the Octa base the brand describes as the first automatic movement with a reserve sufficient for precision timekeeping over five days: 120 hours, with an effective reserve of 160 ± 10 hours. The brand presents this version as an expansion of the original formula: a larger date aperture of 4.7 × 2.6 mm, a moon reworked in sapphire, a retrograde reserve indication on a 120-hour scale, and a larger crown carrying the silk-rope motif. On the standard Automatique Lune the dial is guilloché silver in clous de Paris with blue printed numerals and long teardrop hands in blued steel.
The movement is wound in one direction by an off-centre rotor in 22K 5N gold running on a self-locking ball bearing, so that, in the brand's description, the smallest movement of the wrist goes into winding. Timekeeping is by a variable-inertia balance: free-sprung, four inertia weights, a flat microflamed Anachron spring, 21,600 vibrations an hour. The moon phase is driven by a dedicated wheel train, which the brand gives as the reason for its precision, and it is corrected from the crown, which the brand notes for ease of use. The date changes instantaneously and is set from the crown in position 2; the time in position 3.
For collectors
The retrograde reserve hand reads on a 120-hour scale, while the movement's rated autonomy is 160 ± 10 hours. The scale shows the five days over which the brand guarantees precision timekeeping; the mainspring holds more than the scale shows. A Lune whose hand sits at the end of its scale is not at the end of its reserve, and a piece that runs on past the mark is behaving as specified.
Key details
Design and engineering
- Unidirectional winding on a ball bearingThe off-centre rotor in 22K 5N gold turns on a self-locking ball bearing and winds in one direction only, which the brand describes as the way of putting every small movement of the wrist into the mainspring.
- Dedicated moon trainA specific wheel train drives the moon, which the brand gives as the reason the indication is precise. The moon is in sapphire and is set from the crown.
- Enlarged dateThe large date sits in an aperture of 4.7 × 2.6 mm and changes instantaneously; it is set by turning the crown either way in position 2.
- Retrograde reserveA retrograde hand at 9h00 reads the reserve on a 120-hour scale, the five days the brand rates for precision timekeeping.
- Free-sprung balanceFour inertia weights, flat microflamed Anachron spring, Nivatronic collet, mobile stud holder. Amplitude 280° dial up at 12 hours, 220° at 90 hours.
- Dial and crownBlue guilloché silver with 18K gold appliqué numerals, white gold on the platinum cases and 5N gold on the 6N gold cases; rhodium-plated or 5N gilt steel hands to match; a larger crown with the silk-rope motif.
- FinishHigh grade: circular stripes on the bridges, partly circular-grained base plate, polished screw heads with chamfered slots, pegs with polished rounded ends, steelwork with polished chamfers.
