Overview

The Octa base, time and date

The F.P. Journe Automatique, reference AN, in platinum, white gold and whitened guilloché silver dial, blued steel hands. Self-winding calibre 1300.3, the Octa base: off-centre hours and minutes, small seconds at 4:30, large date and power reserve at 7h30. 10.7 mm high.

F.P. Journe presented the Octa automatic movement in 2001. By the brand's account it has had only three revisions in its 20 years, the latest being the change from bi-directional to unidirectional winding, chosen because a one-way system tensions the long barrel spring faster. The Automatique is presented as a tribute to the Octa Automatique Réserve: a platinum or 18K 6N gold case, and the Octa's hours and minutes, small seconds, large date and power reserve on one dial. Against the earlier dial the reserve indicator has been moved down slightly to make room for a larger date, in a window of 4.7 × 2.6 mm, and the numerals of the hour and minute dial have been enlarged.

Calibre 1300.3 was built for autonomy. In the founder's account the means was a mainspring 1 metre long and 1 millimetre thick, laid on the same level as the train and the escapement rather than stacked above them. Such a spring delivers low torque, which is what let the off-centre rotor wind it quickly, one and a half hours on a Chappuis cyclotest for more than five days' running; the rated autonomy is 160 ± 10 hours. The balance is free-sprung, its rate set by four inertia weights rather than a regulator, with a flat microflamed Anachron spring welded to a Nivatronic collet, at 21,600 vibrations an hour. The date changes instantaneously and is set from the crown in position 2, the time in position 3.

For collectors

F.P. Journe counts three revisions of the Octa in 20 years and names only the last, the one-way rotor, which is on the winding side of the movement. The timekeeping side, the free-sprung balance, the 160-hour reserve and the movement's dimensions, is what the founder says needs no further modification. What separates the Automatique from the Octa it pays tribute to is therefore on the dial: the enlarged date window and numerals and the lowered reserve indicator, not the calibre.

Design and engineering

  • One long, thin mainspringIn the founder's account, 1 metre long and 1 millimetre thick, on the same level as the train and escapement. Its low torque is what allows both the five-day reserve and fast automatic winding; the brand rates autonomy at 160 ± 10 hours.
  • Unidirectional windingThe off-centre rotor winds in one direction only. The brand's reason is that a one-way system tensions the long spring more quickly, and it counts this as the latest of the Octa's three revisions. A slipping mainspring lets the barrel take a full wind without strain.
  • Free-sprung balanceNo regulator index: the rate is set by four inertia weights on the balance. Flat microflamed Anachron spring, Nivatronic laser-welded to the collet, mobile stud holder. Amplitude 280° dial up at 12 hours and 220° at 90 hours.
  • DialOff-centre hours and minutes with enlarged numerals, small seconds at 4:30, the large date in a 4.7 × 2.6 mm window and the reserve indicator at 7h30, lowered to make room for the date. White gold or 5N gold with whitened guilloché silver; blued steel hands.
  • CrownThree positions. The date is set by turning the crown either way in position 2, the time in position 3; the date changes instantaneously.
  • FinishHigh grade: circular stripes on the bridges, partly circular-grained base plate, polished screw heads with chamfered slots, pegs with polished rounded ends, steelwork with polished chamfers.
